The Grand Canyon is another one of those spots that you need to see to believe. It's a really big ditch that more than 4 million people visit each year. If you want to really get to know the canyon start your way down to the valley on either the South Kaibab or Bright Angel Trail. Just go a few miles and you'll be able to look up at the rim from below or go all the way down until you get to the phantom ranch where you can put your foot in the fast moving Colorado River.
If rafting is more your style be prepared to pay a fortune to go through an outfitter or else you will have to wait several years to get a permit to go down the river privately. It's kind of ridiculous and I agree boat traffic should be regulated, but the favoritism of the commercial vendors over private groups is understandable but disproportionate.
I hope to return to hike from rim to rim in a day (since an old man I met last time here was doing this every week or so, and he was 80 years old).
I returned to scope out the campgrounds at the floor of the canyon. I hiked into the canyon from the North Rim, 7 miles later I was at Cottonwood Campground. I continued to hike a little further but then I noticed that it would be another 7 miles to the Colorado River so I turned around to assure that I made it back out before sunset. It's a good thing that I turned around prematurely because I barely made it out. The last three miles took me nearly five hours as I had to give my fatigued legs numerous breaks. It's pretty cool at the canyon floor. It gives you a totally different perspective but in order to spend a night or two down there you either have to have your trip planned out months in advance, travel extremely late in the season, be willing to spend 1-2 nights up at the rim, or get lucky and arrive at the permit station early one morning to reserve your campsite(s). It's busier than I imagined it would be down at the floor and you must camp in a designated site.
